The Story

"All I need is one horse. One horse can take you around the world and back again."

In 1965, Dexter, New Mexico was so small the census didn't bother to keep population numbers. Humble origins for Mike Smith, a boy so eager to begin his ascent to greatness he altered his birth certificate to race at 15 when the legal minimum was 16.

A decade later Smith would emerge as America's number one Jockey, breaking records for Stakes wins and pulling in millions in earnings. A meteoric rise that came to a crashing halt when a fall resulted in a broken back and collapsed lung. Two months in a body cast could have meant the end of a hall of fame career, but Mike Smith was just getting started.

In 2005, Smith would ride an impossible longshot to victory at the Kentucky Derby, kicking off the second half of his career that was so marked by high profile purses that he was given the moniker "Big Money" Mike. It should be no surprise he holds the record for Grade 1 Stakes victories with accumulated earnings over $356 Million. As if the legend couldn't grow any larger, in 2018, 35 years after his first professional win, 15 years after induction into the Horse Racing Hall of Fame, Mike Smith would go on to win the TRIPLE CROWN atop Justify. Only 11 other riders in history have won the Triple Crown, at 52, Mike was the oldest.

Big Money Mike: A Documentary Film will follow this racing great who, after four decades of competition at the highest level, embarks on one last run for the Kentucky Derby.
